Miguel de Icaza passa a Mac e lo consiglia pure
Miguel de Icaza, il noto sviluppatore messicano papà di Gnome e di Mono passa al Mac.
Ebbene si, la notizia arriva direttamente dal blog personale di Miguel de Icaza. Lo sviluppatore ha ammesso di non utilizzare più Linux dall’Ottobre del 2012.
Da quando ha cambiato casa non ha sentito la necessità di rimettere in funzione la sua macchina con Linux e ha continuato ad utilizzare un Mac.
Ma come è nato tutto ciò. Le radici del problema risalgono al 2008 quando Miguel ha deciso di portare con se, per un viaggio in Brasile, solamente il Mac che Novell gli aveva fornito per lo sviluppo. Ecco cosa racconta:
In some vacation to Brazil around 2008 or so, I decided to
only take the Mac for the trip and learn to live with the OS
as a user, not just as a developer.Computing-wise that three week vacation turned out to be
very relaxing. Machine would suspend and resume without
problem, WiFi just worked, audio did not stop working, I spend
three weeks without having to recompile the kernel to adjust
this or that, nor fighting the video drivers, or deal with the
bizarre and random speed degradation that my ThinkPad
suffered.
Come potete leggere dalle sue parole, durante l’uso con il Mac, Miguel ha potuto apprezzare i “vantaggi” del Mac: la sospensione funzionava correttamente, non c’erano problemi con il WiFi, l’audio non smetteva di funzionare senza motivo e per tre settimane (tanto è durato il suo viaggio col sol Mac) non ha dovuto ricompilare il Kernel per risolvere vari problemi ne combattere con i driver video o litigare con il suo ThinkPad con Linux che ogni tanto soffriva di problemi di velocità.
Ha quindi deciso di comprarsi un portatile Mac e usarlo tutti i giorni:
From this point on, using the Mac was a part-time gig for
me. During the Novell layoffs, I returned my laptop to
Novell and I was left with only one Linux desktop computer at
home. I purchased a Mac laptop and while I fully intended to
keep using Linux, the dogfooding driver was no longer there.
Per Icaza la frammentazione della piattaforma Linux, le molteplici distribuzioni incompatibili e le incompatibilità fra versione delle stessa distro sono state un punto di non ritorno come Three Mile Island o Chernobyl.
To me, the fragmentation of Linux as a platform, the
multiple incompatible distros, and the incompatibilities
across versions of the same distro were my Three Mile
Island/Chernobyl.Without noticing, I stopped turning on the screen for my
Linux machine during 2012. By the time I moved to a new
apartment in October of 2012, I did not even bother plugging
the machine back and to this date, I have yet to turn it on.
Senza accorgersene ha smesso di accendere la sua macchina Linux nell’ottobre 2012 e non si è nemmeno preoccupato di farlo.
Ma la cosa che lascia ancor più perplessi è questa frase:
Even during all of my dogfooding and Linux advocacy days,
whenever I had to recommend recommended a computer to a single
new user, I recommended a Mac. And whenever I gave away
computer gifts to friends and family, it was always a Mac.
Linux just never managed to cross the desktop chasm.
Icasa ammette che ha raccomandato a tutti coloro glielo chiedessero di comprare un Mac. E ogni volta che ha comprato un computer per regalarlo a parenti e amici è stato sempre un Mac.
